Website Optimizer for affiliates.

I suspect there may be an easy way around this that I haven't worked out (as I'm quite new to this).
I really want to use google website optimizer on my affiliate sites but from what i understand it will only really work if for merchant style sites which have a conversion page. Ie, the Thank You for Paying page.
Is there a way of making it work if i, like many affiliates, woudld consider a conversion (in terms of optimization at least) to be when a visitor clicks on one of our affiliate links?

Just to add.

If you want to track which site design/content leads to more conversions once the visitor has gone to the merchant's site the best you can really do is pass different tracking IDs via your affiliate link.
